The King and His Son

The King and His Son

By David G. McAfee

Once upon a time, there was a powerful and benevolent king. He ruled with grace and love over his subjects and, without him, he assured them that they would surely perish. For all of his grace, the king demanded only worship from his subjects, and little more. Continue reading

My Childhood and Religion

Everybody is born as an atheist and, without submersion into religion as a child, we would most likely maintain that position… more often than not, however, this is not the case. My parents were not religious people… They may have abused substances religiously- but church was probably the last thing on their minds. When I was two years old, my parents divorced and began their separate lives pursuing drugs to feed their addictions. Clearly, they felt that they were unfit to properly care for their child (though they were always a large part of my life and, for the most part, acted in accordance with standard human morals and decency)- my grandmother thankfully volunteered to care for me until my mother or father could afford (financially and emotionally) to raise me. She never mistreated me or abused me, but she was the first person in my life to introduce me to religion and the authority of the church. Continue reading

A Letter to the Christian Hypocrites

A Letter to the Christian Hypocrites

For all of the “Christians” who don’t abide by the dietary laws of Leviticus[1], didn’t save their virginity for marriage, work on the Sabbath[2], and have accumulated worldly wealth[3]– I ask why you would label yourself as a follower of an outdated tradition that you do not understand. All that I ask is that you question the beliefs that were (most likely) implanted in your mind as a young child and hopefully research your holy texts. If you read the bible from a modern and intellectual perspective, I doubt that you will have the spiritual experience that is to be expected. Instead, you will be disgusted with your “god” and most likely find the archaic principles the book teaches lacking modern relevance and scientific evidence. Continue reading

Why Atheists Need to Understand the Bible- A Response to My Critics

Why Atheists Need to Understand the Bible

Religionists have two primary ways of spreading doctrine: heredity (the passing of religious customs from generation to generation) and formal outward conversion (door-to-door and conversational peddling of religion). Regardless of which religion is being practiced, there are various cited cases of conversion and indoctrination of children- it is clear, however, that the latter is a more effective tactic in the expansion of a belief system. Each religion (at least all successful ones) has a built-in form of reward and punishment system that ensures- to a high probability- that the beliefs and practices are passed successfully from parent to child. Christian Propaganda is EVERYWHERE

It seems like everywhere I turn I see some sort of religious propaganda somewhere, from “John 3:16” written in chalk on the sidewalk or a WWJD bumper sticker on a Mercedes… I’m sure you have seen these ‘stories’ before but this little comic strip, published by Chick Publications, really takes the cake. The Christian right has always pressured American entertainment to censor their work so as not to corrupt the mindset of their children- the themes in this comic are far worse than ‘Will and Grace’ and ‘South Park’.                Today, 03/20/2010, a long awaited lecture took place in the patio room of the “Vista Del Monte” in Santa Barbara, CA. Dr. Darrel Ray, prominent author of “The God Virus” and founder of the Recovering from Religion, gave a much anticipated yet down-to-earth speech to a group of around one hundred people about the controversial issues of the ‘infection’ of religion, sexual guilt, indoctrination, and blind faith, that is so prominent in the United States and the world. The talk, sponsored by the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara, consisted of presentations by the local leaders of the H.S.S.B. followed by a speech by Dr. Ray and a short- yet spirited- ‘Question and Answer’ session. Here I will simply create a list of contradictions within the text of the Holy Bible- though I will be quoting exclusively from the Authorized King James Version- feel free to follow along in any bible because, though wording usually varies among translations, the overall meanings are similar. Some of these are well-known, some are largely ignored, but all show that the bible is false, in one way or another. Continue reading

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”[1] Continue reading

Hereditary Religion: Cultural Genetics

Hereditary Religion: Cultural Genetics

By David McAfee

My interest in the field of Cultural Genetics began two years ago during an interview with a university student for a local magazine. His name was Mike and he was a second-year Theater Major at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I had the chance to speak candidly with Mike and asked him a series of questions regarding his religious preferences and freedoms, his answer to one question in particular would surprise me more than the rest. I asked Mike a very simple question, “Do you consider yourself a religious person?” A 2001 American Religious Identification Survey indicates that 81% of Americans DO associate themselves with a specific religion, so a “Yes” would not have been cause for alarm. Instead, Mike paused for a moment and answered “I’m half Catholic and half Agnostic.” Before I responded, my mind was filled ideas of what he could have meant, some blend of Catholic intrigue mixed with skepticism perhaps? Upon elaboration I discovered that Mike’s mother was a practicing Catholic and his father was not associated with an organized religion. Continue reading
