Religious Studies Grad, Artist Team Up To Teach Children about Beliefs

Secular author David G. McAfee and illustrator/writer Chuck Harrison worked together on “The Belief Book” – an interactive children’s book that helps to teach kids (and kids at heart) about critical thinking, the origins of beliefs, and religions.

February 7 – Religious Studies graduate and skeptical author David G. McAfee teamed up with Chuck Harrison, an illustrator and writer, to create The Belief Book, which helps kids of all ages on their journey toward understanding the world’s most important beliefs and how they are formed. Children young and old who embark on this quest will learn many things they may have always been curious about, including where the first ideas of “gods” came from and how the earliest religions were created and spread.

This first-of-its-kind children’s book has mental exercises and puzzles that can help anyone understand what beliefs are and how they affect everyone and everything. More importantly, The Belief Book outlines the difference between good beliefs, which are supported by evidence, and bad beliefs, which are based on emotion or biases.

With interactive activities and vivid illustrations, The Belief Book teaches children how to examine evidence and form their own ideas. They will learn the importance of definitions, of language in general, and of the scientific method. The book strives to show readers how to think about things in a way that will get them to the right beliefs, and not just which facts to memorize.

Readers will look at some of the most important questions ever asked, including “Where do we come from?” and “Who made us?” and “Why can’t I have ice cream for breakfast?” By the time they are done with the book, children will not only understand the answers to many of their biggest questions, but they will also see why their questions – and all questions – are so incredibly important.

About David G. McAfee: McAfee is a Religious Studies Graduate, journalist, and the author of two other titles: Mom, Dad, I’m an Atheist: The Guide to Coming Out as a Non-believer and Disproving Christianity and other Secular Writings. He is also a contributor to American Atheist Magazine and an editor for Ockham Publishing. McAfee attended University of California, Santa Barbara, and graduated with bachelor’s degrees in English and Religious Studies with an emphasis on Christianity and Mediterranean religions. He believes strongly that religious education and history should be taught in public schools, including and especially in the United States of America – where general knowledge about those topics is severely lacking. It is only by understanding how the religious systems work, and not by ignoring them completely, that McAfee says we can help others to make rational decisions about them.

About Chuck Harrison: Harrison is an illustrator and writer who lives with his son called Puff and his cat named Monkey in New York. His caffeine fueled works have been printed by DC Comics, Color Ink Book, The South Wedge Quarterly and in many other fine publications. Everything else you may wish to know about him can be discovered at iLikeChuckHA.com.

President Barack Obama, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and other top republican lawmakers were behind the U.S. Department of Justice’s gathering of Associated Press reporters’ telephone records reported Monday, according to someone close to the matter.

Obama and Boehner met Monday with other top republicans, including Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., in what was called an “emergency briefing,” less than an hour after AP broke confirmed a DOJ probe, which gathered records for 20 phone lines, including cell phones, assigned to AP reporters over two months in early 2012. BOOK LAUNCH, MOM, DAD, I’M AN ATHEIST: THE GUIDE TO COMING OUT AS A NON-BELIEVER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — BOOK LAUNCH, MOM, DAD, I’M AN ATHEIST: THE GUIDE TO COMING OUT AS A NON-BELIEVER

It’s official! My new book, Mom, Dad, I’m an Atheist: The Guide to Coming Out as a Non-Believer, is now available in paperback and Kindle on Amazon. Within the next month or so, it’ll be made more widely available for iBooks, the Nook, etc.

In Mom, Dad, I’m an Atheist, I discuss what it means to be “out” as an atheist in one’s personal and professional lives, as well as share some best practices for handling conflicts that may result from religions discussions. The book also includes the testimonials of six atheists from varying regions and backgrounds sharing their de-conversion in hopes of helping other non-believers who might be facing similar circumstances.

But, as I try to make clear throughout the book, it’s not only a guide for atheists who come from religious families and have as a result been afraid to voice a lack of faith. In the book, I also discuss the importance of establishing a sense of community among like-minded individuals and share ideas about how to talk about religion in a civil and respectful manner, topics that can be important to the most seasoned heathens. The book also includes a directory, which lists helpful secular organizations, websites, and social networks, and a chapter of Frequently Asked Questions, where I address everything from Pascal’s Wager to the Meaning of Life.

From the back of the book:

This essential guide to coming-out as a non-believer has been written to make it easier for atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, and non-believers of all ages and backgrounds to be open about their non-religiosity while minimizing the negative interactions in familial, social, and professional circles.

As a survival guide for non-believers who wish to come out, this book provides advice and resources for those interested in publically rejecting religious dogma as well as real stories from non-believers who have experienced coming-out to less-than-supportive family or friends.

Whether you’re new to disbelief and looking for the cleanest possible break from your former faith or you’re a lifelong atheist who wants to establish a sense of community with like-minded people, this guide provides useful resources including: tips for handling potential conflicts with believers, the author’s answers to some of the most frequently asked questions on behalf of believers, and numerous references to support groups, services, and advocacy organizations dedicated to non-theists.

From dealing with grief from a secular perspective to handling potential clashes in religious worldviews between significant others, this book offers multiple perspectives from non-religious individuals who have generously shared their experiences to help those atheists who may find themselves in similar situations.

Ode to Reality

We walked on the moon, minds cannot bend spoons;
No one can foretell whether or not the end will come soon.
Psychics can’t read minds and crop circles aren’t signs;
You can’t tell a person’s future by looking at their hand or its lines.
Gods don’t talk to men or otherwise intervene;
And no one can tell the future, not even in dreams.
Crystals don’t heal and Big Foot isn’t real;
Prayer doesn’t affect outcomes, regardless of how it makes you feel.
Personality types aren’t determined by month of birth;
And aliens, if they exist, have likely never visited earth.
The real world is beautiful, there’s no need for more;
Don’t cling to conspiracies or religion or folklore.

The King and His Son

The King and His Son

By David G. McAfee

Once upon a time, there was a powerful and benevolent king. He ruled with grace and love over his subjects and, without him, he assured them that they would surely perish. For all of his grace, the king demanded only worship from his subjects, and little more. Continue reading

Disproving Christianity and other Secular Writings now available for Kindle

Hello, everyone! My new book, Disproving Christianity and other Secular Writings, is officially available in Kindle Edition! It released on Amazon in paperback two weeks ago, and the reviews have been great!

Kindle Edition: $4.99

Paperback Edition: On sale for $12.24

Reviews:

“McAfee shows time and again, inconsistencies and discrepancies as well as many contradictions that are attributed to the Christian God; a character who is supposedly all knowing and essentially perfect – and infallible. The resulting conclusion that one is obliged to reach at the end of a journey through this succinct look at the many problems, is that either the Christian God is a complete liar at worst, entirely contradictory at best, or most likely that He is not actually real at all. The reader is really not left with any alternative conclusion – unless `faith’ in the idea that God can somehow still recover from the onslaught renders the reader incapable of common sense and reason – attributes that would serve much better than faith when considering the numerous problems McAfee considers and exposes.” -Jim Whitefield, author of ‘The Mormon Delusion’ series.

“With the changes he has made in this edition of his wonderful book, Disproving Christianity:Refuting the World’s Most Followed Religion he has again struck a nerve that will resonate among all sides of the theological path.” -Jesse Mathewson (political essayist and staunch atheist)

“I would say that this book is probably a great starting point for anyone that has even the slightest doubt about Christianity. He represents some popular biblical inaccuracies along with a few other not so popular. In the second edition he also includes a few other arguments against faith from a secular prospective that serve to blossom the seed of doubt any uncertain believer may feel.” -Nickolas Johnson

New Book Available Now: Disproving Christianity and Other Secular Writings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Disproving Christianity and Other Secular Writings

Press release from Dangerous Little Books

In July of 2010, secular activist, author, and student of Religious Studies, David G. McAfee published a controversial and thought-provoking book: “Disproving Christianity: Refuting the World’s Most Followed Religion.” In light of an overwhelmingly positive response to the work and McAfee’s newly awarded Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies, he has now signed a contract with Dangerous Little Books (the notorious upstart publisher specialising in atheist literature) to publish a revised and expanded second edition of his first book. The new book expands greatly on the original and contains additional content not present in its first release. Mr. McAfee has been a regular contributor for American Atheist Magazine and a columnist for Canadian Freethinker Magazine, in addition to maintaining his own website featuring secular literature.

LA-based McAfee explains, “This book is an attempt to compile popular and unknown arguments against the principles of the Christian canon. Christianity has become separated into many smaller sects, but retains some constant biblical tenets and divine ideas. It is these similarities that are crucial if my thesis is to be considered a ‘disproval’. In order to combat biblical fundamentalism and literalism, I have compiled essays and biblical analysis which discuss some of the contradictory and controversial passages from the Hebrew Scriptures (which Christians refer to as the “Old Testament”) and the New Testament, along with modern practices, beliefs, and teachings of twenty-first century Christianity in an attempt to make known the discrepancies which have largely been ignored within the Christian Church- especially in Western Society.”

In this introductory look into the world of Christianity and the refutation of its key principles McAfee sets out to arm rational-minded people with key facts to challenge dogmatism wherever it arises. Using (almost exclusively) evidence and passages from the Christian Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, McAfee is able to establish new arguments against the validity of the Christian religion as well as reorganize and reevaluate some of the more traditional debates. Through a close-reading of the Sacred Texts and years of studying the Christian theology from a secular viewpoint, David G. McAfee uncovers contradictions in the Holy Bible and contradictions in modern Christian teachings and why these reveal problems with the founding pillars of Christianity itself.

CJ Werleman, atheist author and commissioning editor for Dangerous Little Books says, “… (Disproving Christianity) offers a concise compilation of inconsistencies and discrepancies in the Bible that could be used to provide reasoned, specific challenges to Christianity. David does a fantastic job presenting the material in an objective, balanced way. We’re very proud to have added this important title to our growing list.”
